On this page I have posted one my chess games in which I played the White side of the English Opening . The game includes analysis and diagrams. This is one of my games played at Stan's Net Chess. My rating at this site became 2162 after this win. My opponent's rating dropped to 1900. This is my third win against okie901 and my second win on time forfeit. I am now 3-0 against him.

1. c4 e5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. d3 Bb4

English opening after 3... Bb4.

I usually play 3. g3 but for some reason I cannot remember I played 3. d3 in this game. I don't like playing against 3... Bb4 because Black usually captures my Knight on c3 and I end up with doubled pawns.

4. Bd2 O-O 5. a3 Bxc3 6. Bxc3 d6 7. g3 Nc6 8. Bg2 Re8 9. e3 Bg4

English opening after 9... Bg4.

Black has played me twice before and knows my style of play. Black's last move is another one that gave me some trouble. Playing 10. Ne2 blocks the attack on my Queen and develops a piece, but that piece will be pinned until I move my Queen off d1. Putting my pawn on f3 blocked the attack on my Queen but it also blocked my fianchettoed Bishop as well. The Knight move may have been better.

10. f3 Bh5 11. Ne2 d5 12. b4 d4

English opening after 12... d4.

Here is where I blundered and lost a pawn. Capturing on d4 lead to the loss of a pawn and that extra pawn for Black turned out to be a passed one. Better here is 13. Bd2 in order to protect the pawn at e3.

13. exd4? exd4 14. Bd2 Ne5!

English opening after 14... Ne5!

Notice that White has yet to castle and that his pieces are not well coordinated. I put the Bishop on d2 instead of b2 because I wanted to keep the Black Rook off e3. Now I have a choice of which pawn to give up. Castling here protects the f pawn and develops a piece.

15. O-O Nxd3 16. Nf4 Nxf4 17. Bxf4 b6 18. c5

English opening after 18. c5.

I put my pawn on c5 in order to prevent Black from putting one of his pawns on c5. I want to isolate Black's d pawn so that I have a chance to win it.

d3 19. cxb6 cxb6 20. Re1 Rxe1+ 21. Qxe1 Bg6 22. Qd2 1-0

English opening after 22. Qd2 (Final position).

My opponent took a long time on every move and overstepped the time control on this one. I am grateful to get another win on time forfeit because I wasn't going to win this game any other way. If Black had played 22... Rc8 I would have played 23. Rc1 and traded off the rooks. Otherwise, I would have played my Bishop to f1 and my Rook to d1 in order to keep pressure on Black's d pawn.
