Game Played 10 August 2008 to 16 September 2008
White: Mike Serovey (1649) Black:
Stahlberg (1607)
1. c4 Nf6 2. g3 g6 3. Bg2 Bg7 4. Nc3 O-O 5. d3 d6 6. e4
c5

Up to this point Black has been playing the Anglo-Indian
defense. Now, White starts the Botvinnik system.
7. Nge2 Nc6 8. O-O Ne8

Pulling the Knight back to e8 only makes sense if Black
intends to follow it with f5, which he did a couple of moves later.
9. Be3 Nd4 10. f4 f5 11. Qd2 a6

White had no intention of putting his Knight on b5; it
normally goes to d5. So, Black's last move only makes sense if he is
planning to follow it with b5. White now plays his Bishop to f2 so that he
can capture the Black Knight on d4 with the Knight on e2 and then reposition
the other Knight to e2.
12. Bf2 Nxe2+ 13. Qxe2 Rb8 14. exf5 gxf5 15. Bd5+ Kh8
16. Rfe1 Bf6

White now controls the e file and is putting pressure on
the Black pawn at e7. White now puts his Bishop back on g2 so that he can
put his Knight on d5 adding to the pressure at e7.
17. Bg2 Nc7 18. Rad1 Bd7 19. d4 Qc8?

Black's last move loses a pawn at c5. Better
was 19... cxd4.
20. dxc5 dxc5 21. Bxc5 Ne6 22. Ba3!

Re8?? 23. Rxd7 1-0
White is keeping pressure on the pawn at e7 which is why
Black played his next move. However, he missed 23. Rxd7 winning a Bishop and
Knight for a Rook when he was already down a pawn. Being down the equivalent
of two pawns he resigned.
