Welcome to my Benko's Opening (A00) game with SlowMoe!

On this page I have posted one my chess games in which I played the White side of the Benko's Opening. The game includes analysis and diagrams. (Click HERE to learn more about Pal Benko, whom this opening is named after.) I haven't been able to find a book on Benko's Opening, probably because it usually transposes into another opening.

1. g3 e5 2. Bg2 d5 3. d3 Be7 4. Nf3 Bb4+

Black plays this opening like it is a Nimzo Indian Defense. White plays a reversed Pirc Defense.

5. c3 Bd6 6. O-O c6 7. Nbd2 Qc7

I have noticed that SlowMoe has a tendency to play moves like that last one. As far as I can tell the Queen move does nothing.

8. e4 (Let's break open the Center while Black's King is still there.) Bg4

Black develops a Bishop and pins the Knight on f3 to the Queen. White breaks the pin with his next move, which puts the Queen on the same file as Black's King and thus indirectly attacks that King.

9. Qe1 Ne7 10. exd5 Nxd5

Now there is only one defender between the White Queen and the Black King.

11. Ne4 Bf8? (Undevelops a piece and  prevents Kingside castling.) 12. h3 (Kicking the Black Bishop.) Bf5

White is OK if Black trades his Bishop on f5 for the White Knight on e4. White wants to capture the Black pawn on e5 while the Black King is still in the Center.

13. d4 Qc8 14. Kh2 Qd8 15. dxe5 Kd7?

The Black King was not in immediate danger and did not need to move on this turn. Better would have been 15... Be7 followed by 0-0.

16. Bg5! f6 17. exf6 gxf6 18. Ne5+!

This is my quickest win against SlowMoe. It seems like the program is trying to get mated. The Black pawn on f6 cannot capture the Knight on e5 without losing the Queen to Bxd8. I think that the best moves for Black here are 18... Kc7 followed by Nd7, Rc8 and then Kb8. Keeping the Black King in the Center only helps White's attack on the King.

Ke7? 19. Nxf6

White is now up two pawns with the Black King stuck in the Center. If 19... Nxf6?? then 20. Nxc6+ winning the Queen for a pair of knights. Another threat here is 20. Nxd5++ winning the Queen for a Bishop.

Qc8 20. Nxd5+ Kd6

Notice that Black has 2 rooks, a Knight and a Bishop that are doing next to nothing while the Black King gets chased around the Center.

21. Nf7+ Kd7 22. Nf6+

This is getting really ugly for Black. The Rook on h8 is hanging and the King is still in trouble here.

Kc7 23. Nxh8 Kb6 24. Qe3+ Bc5

Now Black can get back some of his lost material. Black still needs to develop the Queen's Knight and Rook.

25. Qf4 Bxh3 26. Bxh3 Qxh8

Now White is up a Rook, a Bishop and a pawn. Black still needs to get the QR and QN into this game!

27. b4 Bf8 28. Qd4+ c5

White is now getting his Queenside pawns into the attack on Black's King.

29. bxc5+ Kb5 (Better is Bxc5 bring that Bishop into the defense of the Black King.) 30. a4+ Kc6

Notice how Black's pieces still aren't doing much while the Black King get chased around the board!

31. Qd5+ Kc7 32. Bf4+! Bd6

Black's last move was forced because the Black King has nowhere to go.

33. cxd6+ (creating a passed pawn in the Center.) Kd8 34. Bg5 h6 35. Bh4 Nc6

Now White is up a Rook, 2 bishops and 2 pawns. I would be insulted if a human opponent made me play this position out!

36. Qe6 Qf8 37. Qd7# 1-0
