On this page I have posted one my chess games in which I played the
White side of the
English
Opening . The game includes analysis and diagrams. This game is one of
two games in which I managed to draw an expert. This game starts off as a
Réti and transposes into an
English
Opening.

White: Mike Serovey (1530) Black: Paul Farb (2107)
1. Nf3 d6 2. c4 e5 3. Nc3 Nc6 4. g3 g6 5. Bg2 Bg7 6.
O-O Nge7 7. d3 O-O
Now we have a fairly typical
English Opening. White will attack on the Queenside and Black will
attack in the Center.
8. a3 a5 9. Rb1 f5
Black might have been better off playing 9... h6 in order
to prevent Bg5. Here Black is threatening to play e4 so White needs to play
10. Qc2. I don't know why I played 11. Nd5 instead of 11. Ne1.
10. b4 e4 11. Nd5 exf3 12. Bxf3 axb4 13. axb4 Ne5 14.
Bg5 Nxf3+ 15. exf3 Nxd5!?
Here is where things start to get a little interesting and
weird. Black exchanges his Queen and a pawn for a Rook and 2 bishops.
16. Bxd8 Nc3 17. Qb3 Nxb1 18. Rxb1 Rxd8
Black is up the equivalent of a pawn and the doubled pawns
on the f file make it two pawns. The bishop pair can cause trouble for the
White Queen and Rook.
19. Kg2 Be6 20. Qc2 Bf7 21. Re1 Bf6 22. b5 Ra3 23. Re2
Rda8 24. h4 Ra2?
Black is trading a pair of rooks for a Queen. A pair of
rooks is usually stronger than a Queen. Black believes that his pair of
bishops will be stronger than the White Rook.
25. Qxa2 Rxa2 26. Rxa2 d5 27. Ra8+ Kg7 28. Ra7 dxc4 29.
dxc4 Bxc4 30. Rxb7 Kh6 31. Rxc7 Bxb5
It is now a Rook and pawn versus two bishops, but White's
extra pawn is doubled. This gives Black a slight advantage. As long
as White holds onto his Rook and Black keeps both bishops this game is a
draw.
32. Rb7 Be2 33. Rb6 Kg7 34. Rb7+ Kg8 35. Rb8+ Kf7 36.
Rb7+ Be7 37. Rb2 Bc4 38. Rc2 Be6 39. Rc7 Kf6 40. Ra7 h5 41. Ra5 f4?
Black gives away a pawn in order to triple White's pawns
on the f file, but it gives him no advantage.
42. gxf4 Bb4 43. Rb5 Bd6 44. Kg3 Bd7 45. Ra5 Ke7
