Welcome to my
English Opening game with James Augustus page!
On this page I have posted one my chess games in which I played the
White side of the
English
Opening. The game includes analysis and diagrams.
Rhine Main December Open
Rhine Main AFB, Frankfurt, Germany
Round 4
15 December 1985
White: Mike Serovey (1499) Black: James Augustus (1724)
1. c4 e6 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. g3 d5

At this point in my career I played the
English Bremen as White along
with the Réti Opening. Black's last move sidesteps this.
4. cxd5 exd5 5. d4 Be7 6. Bg2 O-O 7. Nf3 Nc6 8. O-O Bf5
9. a3 Ne4 10. Nd2 Nxd4 11. Ndxe4 dxe4 12. Bxe4

Although I win a Pawn, I weaken my King's position by trading the
light-squared Bishop.
Bxe4 13. Nxe4 c5 14. Be3 f5 15. Nd2 Bf6 16. Rb1 Qd5 17.
Re1

Here I'm asking for Knight forks on f3 and c3.
17... Rae8 18. b4 (Taking the Knight was better
because it eliminates the forks.) c4 (Now Black has a passed c Pawn
as well as the fork possibility.) 19. Rc1 Rc8 20. Nb1 Rfd8 21. Nc3 Qe6
22. Qa4 Nb3 23. Rc2 a6

Now Black has the passed c Pawn and my Queen is out of play. The Black
Knight is well anchored on b3. Black has his Rooks well placed with one on
an open file and the other behind a passed Pawn.
24. b5 a5 25. Nd1 Bd4 26. Bxd4 Nxd4 27. Ra2 Nf3+

Here is the fork that I mentioned earlier. Now I'm lost!
28. Kf1 Nxe1 29. Kxe1 c3 30. Rc2 Qd5 31. Ne3 Qh1+ 32.
Nf1 Rd1+ 0-1

33. KXd1 QXf1 mates.
