On this page I have posted one my chess games in which I played the Black side of the English Opening . The game includes analysis and diagrams. This game started off as an English opening and transposed into a Dutch, and thus it is classified as an English: Anglo-Dutch defense. The ratings listed below are for each player at the conclusion of this game.

1. c4 f5 2. Nc3 Nf6 3. Nf3 e6 4. g3 Be7

English opening after 4... Be7.

I'm inclined to play 4... g6 and 5... Bg7 but I didn't because I am following a grandmaster game in my database.

5. Bg2 d6 6. O-O O-O 7. d4 Kh8

English opening after 7... Kh8.

Although I played it I don't really like Black's last move because it doesn't seem to do anything and Black is lagging behind in development.

8. Qc2 Nc6 9. a3 d5 10. cxd5 Nxd5

English opening after 10... Nxd5.

Black has caught up in development and is now challenging the Center. White decided to kick the Knight or open up the Center with his next move.

11. e4 fxe4 12. Nxe4 Rf5 13. b4 a6 14. Bb2 Qf8 15. Nfd2 a5 16. b5 Na7 17. a4 c6 18. bxc6 Nxc6

English opening after 18... Nxc6.

Both sides now have 3 pawn islands each. Black has one isolated pawn and White has two. Black has his knights where he wants them and just needs to develop his light-squared Bishop.

19. Nc4 Bd7 20. Ne5 Nxe5 21. dxe5 Rc8 22. Qb3 Rb8 23. Bd4 Bb4

English opening after 23... Bb4.

Black's last move protects both the a and b pawns. Black's next move is an attempt to create a passed pawn on the Queenside.

24. f4 b5 25. axb5 Bxb5 26. Rfc1 Bd7 27. Qa2 Rb5 28. Bf1 Rb8 29. Bc5 Qd8

English opening after 29... Qd8.

I looked at 29... Bxc5+ 30. Nxc5 and realized that both my a pawn and my Bishop would be unprotected and I would thus lose one of them.

30. Bh3 Rh5 31. Bg4 Rh6 32. Nd6 Kg8 1/2-1/2

English opening after 32... Kg8 (Final position).

Black has two well protected isolated pawns and White has a kingside pawn chain. Black has a passed pawn on the a file but can't safely move it. Black doesn't want to capture the Bishop on c5 and White doesn't want to capture on b4. Neither side has any real play here so a draw was agreed. I won my game with White against this opponent.
