On this page I have posted one my chess games in which I played the Black side of the Dutch Defense. The game includes analysis and diagrams. This was a non rated game played at ICC. This game was my very first attempt at playing the Dutch Defense. I decided to try using the Dutch Defense against both 1. c4 and 1. Nf3 as well as against 1. d4. I lost this game because I misplayed the opening. I have looked at several grandmaster games since then and now have a better ideal of how to play this variation of the Dutch Defense.

    Dutch Defense after 2... Nf6.


	
I don't like playing the Black side of an English 

    opening because I play it as White. This is the very first time that I have 

    tried playing the Dutch defense against the English opening. After White's 

    next move we are into regular Dutch lines. I will probably lose more games 

    until I get a better feel for this opening.


	
3. d4 e6 4. e3 d5 


	


    Dutch Defense after 4... d5.


	
I decided to try the Stonewall variation even though I 

    didn't know it very well. In grandmaster games White never captures on d5, 

    so I was a little surprised when it happened here. I'm not sure if 

    recapturing with the Knight or the pawn was better.


	
5. cxd5 exd5 6. Nf3 Be6 


	


    Dutch Defense after 6... Be6.


	
After looking at several grandmaster games I have decided 

    that fianchettoing the light-squared Bishop was a better idea than playing 

    it to e6. At e6 the Bishop basically acts like a tall pawn. White's next 

    move is a waste of a tempo because I was going to put my pawn on c6 anyways.

    


	
7. Bb5+ c6 8. Bd3 g6 9. a3 Bg7 10. b4 a6 


	


    Dutch Defense after 10... a6.


	
I looked at playing b5 here and on the next move but 

    didn't like having a backwards c pawn if I did. Instead, I ended up with a 

    backwards b pawn that I eventually lost.


	
11. Na4 O-O 12. Bd2 Nbd7 13. O-O h6 14. Nc5! 

    


	


    Dutch Defense after 14. Nc5!


	
White is now attacking both the Black Bishop at e6 and the 

    Black pawn at b7. Black must capture on c5 in order to save both men, but 

    when White recaptures on c5 Black is left with the backwards b pawn. Instead 

    of 15... Ne4 I might have been better off playing 15... b5 and if 16. cxb6 

    then 16... Qxb6 followed by Rfc8 and c5.

I believe that 16... Ra7 followed by Qc7 and Rb8 was 

    better. When White put his Rook on b6 it became impossible for Black to 

    advance that pawn. White tripled up on that pawn at b7 and Black couldn't 

    adequately defend it.


	
17. Rb6 Nxd2 18. Qxd2 Qc7 19. Rfb1 g5 20. Qb2!! 

    


	


    Dutch Defense after 20. Qb2!!


	
There is no way to defend that pawn at b7. If Black plays 

    either 20... Rf7 or 20... Bc8 White can win at least one pawn with 21. 

    Bxa6!! Perhaps 20... g4 was better than 20... f4 here.

    Dutch Defense after 25. Rb6.


	
Black cannot save both the a pawn and the c pawn. Black is 

    down one pawn and about to go down a second one. Black has no counterplay on 

    the Kingside but tries to hold on for a few more moves anyways.


	
Bd7 26. Bxa6 Kf7 27. Ne1 h5 28. Nc2 Bc8 29. Bxc8 Rxc8 

    30. Nb4 1-0


	


    Dutch Defense after 30. Nb4 (Final position).


	


    Black is now down 2 pawns and about to go down a third one. 

    There is now way to defend against passed pawns on both the a and c files. I 

    really do hope that future attempts at playing the Dutch Defense work out 

    better than this game did!
