Mike Serovey On Chess

Welcome to my Réti Opening (ECO A05) ICC online game with Doran page!

On this page I have posted one my chess games in which I played the Black side of the Réti Opening. I rarely play the Black side of the Réti or the English Opening . The game includes analysis and diagrams. Here is the interactive version of this game..

White: Doran (1673) Black: Mike Serovey (1670)

1. Nf3 Nf6 2. d3 g6 3. g3 Bg7 4. Bg2 O-O 5. O-O d6

Reti Opening after 5... d6

This is a symmetrical position that can transpose into the English or the Réti.

6. e4 c5

Reti Opening after 6... c5

Now we have a position that is identical to some lines of the Kings Indian Attack

7. Nbd2 Nc6 8. c3 Bd7 9. Nh4 Qc8 10. f4 Bh3 11. Nhf3 Bxg2 12. Kxg2

Reti Opening after 12. Kxg2

White's Kingside position has been weakened by the loss of the white-squared Bishop. Black has a lead in development and can attack on the Queenside. This position now is the Réti - KIA VS. The Sicilian Dragon.

d5 13. e5 Nd7 14. d4 cxd4 15. cxd4 e6

Reti Opening after 15... e6

Black has stabilized the Center and is now going to open it up. Normally, I would attack on the Queenside in positions like this one.

16. Rf2 f6 17. Nf1 fxe5 18. Nxe5 Ndxe5 19. dxe5?

Reti Opening after 19. dxe5?

Normally you want to capture towards the Center. White does keep his pawn structure intact but, Black now has a passed pawn in the Center.

b6 20. Rc2 Qb7 21. a3 Rfd8 22. Qf3 Rd7

Reti Opening after 22... Rd7

White misses the obvious threat of 23... Nd4 forking the Queen and Rook. Black is also planning to double the rooks behind the passed d Pawn and push it down White's throat. If instead White had played 23. Be3 then 23... Rad8 24. Rac1 Ne7 and Black is still better.

23. Bd2?? Nd4!  0-1
